Three Things To Think About When Launching A New Product

on Apr 14, 2022 in Small business

Launching a new product can help take your business to new heights by helping you to capitalize on current consumer trends and increase your revenue. However, it also comes with a little bit of risk. After all, there’s always a chance that your product won’t make a splash on the market. At best, this could be a little disappointing; at worst, it could cause you to lose a great deal of money.

However, there are certain steps you can take to minimize these risks, the majority of which revolves around careful planning and consideration. With that in mind, here are three things to think about when launching a new product.

What your customers actually want

As a business owner, it’s essential that you don’t act like a mind reader and presume to know what your customers want. Instead, you need to ask them directly – by hosting focus groups with your target audience. Alternatively, this is one of the times where you can use data to grow your business, as you can do research to figure out what products your target audience are buying and which they are not.

This research will enable you to curate products for which there is pre-existing market demand. As a result, you’ll be able to minimize the risk associated with launching a new product.

The legalities

No matter what kind of product you are launching, from sunscreen to massage oils, there are certain regulations or standards you must meet to introduce the product to market. These standards were put in place to protect consumers and businesses, which means they can be instrumental in helping you solidify your brand’s reputation and potential growth.

You can find out more about standards or look up products here: www.standards.org.au

You should also make sure that you are not infringing upon any copyright laws in the creation of your product or taking an idea that has already been produced by another business. Not only will this cheapen your brand, but it could also open you up to lawsuits and financial trouble.

Your Marketing Strategy

A successful product launch must be accompanied by a strong marketing plan. After all, if you don’t advertise your new product, how will you ensure it sells? Thankfully, there are various marketing strategies out there for you to choose from. For example, you can use your social media presence to generate hype around your products – by posting advertisements or hosting a competition where those who engage with your posts stand a chance of winning a free product.  Alternatively, you could host a product launch party, which will again help you to build up hype around the products (and future releases) while also providing you with a valuable networking opportunity.

However, it’s equally important to remember that your marketing plan does not have to be set in stone. In fact, it can be subject to change if you notice that you aren’t gaining the traction or engagement you expected – as this clearly means you aren’t hitting the mark.
