on Jul 24, 2019 in Small business

The internet has opened up many unique employment opportunities for those who are willing to chase them. Whether it’s a career as a freelance writer or offering personal training to individuals all over the world, it’s possible to work from nothing more than just your laptop. Sadly, one of the disadvantages is that you lack a dedicated workspace, meaning it’s easy to get distracted and lose focus.

But in this article, we’re going to show you that it’s completely possible to avoid those distractions and ensure that you can get work done.

Finding the right workplace

While most people are content working at home, there are a number of different locations that you can use in order to get work done. For instance, you could consider coworking locations near your local area or you could even find refuge in a local coffee shop that even offers free WiFi. You could also stay at home to get work done, but instead of just working on your desk or a dinner table, you could build your own office location such as in your backyard or by taking over an unused room and turning it into a study.

There are many possibilities for finding the right workplace, but it does take a little experimentation to find out what works best for you.

Keeping yourself distracted from the outside world

When you’re working as an at-home entrepreneur, it’s easy to get distracted by small things such as conversations on the other side of the coffee shop, groups in coworking spaces or even your family members. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to keep yourself away from these distractions.

  • Plug in some headphones and listen to instrumental music without lyrics.
  • Alternatively, use noise-cancelling headphones and simply leave them on without music so that you can hear yourself think.
  • Pick less-crowded coffee shops and coworking spaces if they’re available.
  • If you’re working from home, let your family members know when you’re working with a sign at your door or something similar so they don’t distract you unless it’s important.
  • Set regular work hours so that you’re less likely to be distracted when working hours where your friends and family members are more likely to speak to you.

Keeping yourself away from the rest of the world is important if you want to get work done. Thankfully, this is very easy regardless of where your workplace is but you do need to pay attention and actively try to avoid distractions.

Making your laptop more productive

It’s also important to ensure that you’re not being distracted with things on your laptop or computer of choice. For instance, if you’ve always got a movie on in the background or a tab open with your personal social media pages, then it’s very easy to get distracted. You probably wouldn’t be watching a film or checking social media if you worked at a regular job, so making sure you remove these distractions is the key to getting work done.

Hopefully, this article has helped you become a more productive at-home entrepreneur or freelancer. Setting up the perfect working environment isn’t easy, but it’s certainly possible.
